My boyfriend bought a nintendo DS in blue when it first came out - he's played it quite a bit but we've often fought over who wanted to play it more! He actually got a DS Lite so that we could stop fighting over who plays, and now we only fight over games. The games are friendly and generally innoffensive, but nevertheless just as much fun and more than other handhelds. I own a PSP which I barely play in comparison to the DS. Games are widely available, but generally remain at £30 for a long time before being reduced or put on buy 1 get 1 half price offers. That said, most games such as Mario, Animal Crossing, Nintendogs etc give hours of play and often have mini games which are fun to play even when you've completed the title sequence game. The console is really durable but I'd reccommend a carry case and screen covers just to extend the life. If you're buying for a kid, have long nails or are clumsy, you might want to think about getting a different colour (eg silver) or a DS Lite as the blue may become scratched, although mine isn't scratched after about 18 months of use. Definitely a high quality, excellent value console. The DS lite is a great upgrade, but if you want something a bit cheaper then this DS is excellent.
