      By Sergey Samarin

Review summary: Today we are going to take a look at another solution from the EPSON Perfection family, which was supposed to update the series of scanners targeted at photo amateurs and advanced users. How good will this mainstream product prove in our lab? Find out ...

Verdict: This review is approaching its end, so it's time to sum it up in a few words. And in my opinion, the Epson Perfection 4490 Photo is a somewhat insipid, aimless product. It has a rather high price ($250) but lacks some useful functions. I don't like ...

    • Pros: everything
    • Cons: can't find any

My 4990 is my third Epson Perfection scanner. After waiting years for someone to produce a scanner which took large format negatives Epson provided the ideal thing. My first I had for several years, which had a seperate light hood for negatives, then I got a 4870 with built in light hood, which I have had for a few years, the 4990 is very similar, and I now use both in diffrent locations. The qual... Read Full Review »

    Epson 4990

Compare Prices : Compare Prices : Epson Perfection 4990 Photo By Colin Wright (03/08/2006)
    • Pros: excellent, sharp results
    • Cons: A little bulky

Clear, simple set up instructions. Results from scanning my 35mm slides were excellent. I am glad I spent extra money on this high resolution scanner (4800 x 9600 dpi)- it was well justified.I cannot fault it so far. The scanner is solid and well built. Its bulky to move it around - this is the only problem for me.
Incidentally, "shopping4cameras.com" were also excellent. The price was ... Read Full Review »

    Epson 4990 lasted 73 scans.

    • Pros: Epson will replace it if more than 30 days old with a 'refurbed' unit!
    • Cons: Cons? Epson are the cons!!!!!!!!!!

Bought a 4990 in late June. It's an ok piece of Kit, It replaced my Umax Astra 6440 firewire, which I was perfectly happy with. My scan log shows I have made 73 scans in the 3 months I have owned the 4990. Suddenly green streaks started appearing on my scans. mailing epson support, they tell me its broken.Follows is their returns and repair policy. Impressed? neither am I. The issue you are experi...
