Cheap to buy but not to own

By adam cattle (14/09/2006)
  • Pros: set of consumables costs the same as printer - so printer is "free"
  • Cons: Network interface is unreliable

We bought this as a replacement for an epson colour laser in a school ICT suite, it was so cheap it seemed you couldn't lose. However it has been very unreliable connecting to the network and the consumables are too small to use in a school which prints a lot of stuff full colour. the final straw is that the fuser roller has got damaged (probably after someone was trying to remove a jammed sheet of paper) and a replacement costs £100 (half the cost of the printer).
We are going to replace it with a leased Colour Laser printer - no up front cost and only 6.5p per page for colour and 0.6p for B&W.
