HP Pavilion dv7-2173CL
By Eric Grevstad
Review summary: Nothing on a notebook collects more smudgy fingerprints than its touchpad, so whoever specified a chrome touchpad for the HP Pavilion dv7 (2173cl) ($999 list) is guilty of sacrificing practicality for style. Other choices that went into this Costco ...
Pros: Blu-ray and 16:9 display. First-class, full-sized keyboard and keypad. Slick MediaSmart software and miniature remote control
Cons: Suitable for games only at modest resolution and detail settings. Crapware
Verdict: A Blu-ray drive makes the HP Pavilion dv7 (2173cl) desktop replacement laptop a good pick for movie and multimedia buffs.

HP Pavilion dv7-2170us
By Eric Grevstad
Review summary: Need a calculator to figure out whether a notebook's screen fits the newly fashionable 16:9 aspect ratio for high-def video and TV viewing? The HP Pavilion dv7-2170us ($1,099.98 list) makes it easy for you: The widebody's 17.3-inch display resolution ...
Pros: A handsome laptop (OK, tabletop) entertainment center. Hollywood-worthy screen. Brisk general-purpose performance. Cute remote control hides in ExpressCard slot
Cons: Blu-ray and a TV tuner would be welcome additions. Graphics not up for hardcore gaming. Small cursor-control keys (unless you use the numeric keypad's). Ample crapware
Verdict: For over a grand, we would have liked to have seen Blu-ray and/or ultra-fast gaming graphics, but the HP Pavilion dv7-2170us is a stylish slab that's surprisingly attractive anyway.

HP Pavilion dv7-1451nr
By Eric Grevstad
Review summary: The HP Pavilion dv7-1451nr is the more affordable ($799.98) sibling of the dv7-2170us, which costs $300 more. Externally, you can tell the systems apart by the economy model's more understated crosshatched, instead of artistically decorated, black lid ...
Pros: Comfortable, full-sized keyboard plus numeric keypad. Appealing MediaSmart multimedia software and mini remote control. Not-half-bad battery life
Cons: Molasses-class integrated graphics. Older 16:10 widescreen format. No FireWire port. Crapware
Verdict: The older 17- as opposed to newer 17.3-inch incarnation of HP's desktop replacement offers fair value, but skimps on performance and luxuries.

HP Pavilion dv7 2022tx
Pros: Comfortable keyboard, number pad, good performance, reasonable battery life
Cons: No product recovery discs, screen could do with a higher resolution
Verdict: If you're looking for a stylish notebook to replace your space-hogging PC, the HP Pavilion dv7 2022tx is a good choice. It looks good, it's comfortable to use, it performed well in our tests, and has a lot of connectivity options.
