Review summary: The PSP is currently the most powerful portable gaming device out there, but a hefty price and Sony's storage formats may not appeal to all.

Pros: Fantastic wide screen; Wi-Fi; superb graphics

Cons: Mediocre battery life; proprietary storage formats

Verdict: It may be no clamshell nor does it feature a touchpad, but the PSP, Sony's mobile rendition of its hugely successful PlayStation consoles, still looks good enough to ratchet up the challenge points against the Nintendo DS

      Sony PSP (Model 2000)

      By Brian K. Neal

Review summary: Slimmed down and souped up, Sony's latest handheld gaming device, the PSP (model 2000) offers some welcome improvements over its predecessor. It boasts more RAM to make game load times a little faster and is now able to output video straight to your ...

Pros: Sleeker and lighter than the original. A/V output. Raised D-pad offers increased tactile feedback. Additional RAM makes load times faster. Displays photos. Plays video and music files. Built-in Wi-Fi and Web-browsing capabilities. Stunning widescreen ...

Cons: Unfortunate power button location is unchanged from the original. A/V output lacks gaming support for interlaced-only TV sets. USB charging alternative is inconvenient. UMD load times are still an issue. Screen smudges easily

Verdict: Sony's "enhanced" new PSP (model 2000) is a no-brainer for all gaming enthusiasts who seek exciting entertainment on the go. The portable gaming device features a few improvements over the original that make it a win-win proposition for new adopters. ...

Pros: The Sony PSP has a slick design ; impressive wide-screen display ; PS2-like graphics ; built-in Wi-Fi, Web browser, MP3 and video playback, and image viewer ; removable battery

Cons: The Sony PSP's multimedia functionality is half-baked, especially for video ; you need to supply your own software and expensive memory cards

Verdict: The Sony PSP elevates portable gaming to the next level, but its multimedia functionality falls short of its full potential.

Review : Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP)

      By petew

Review summary: The Sony PSP has been around for a while now. Is it still likely to be top of the Christmas list this year? Well - it's top of mine at least.

Verdict: My PC can do that - does that right now. I don't need more hardware for that

      Sony PSP

Review summary: The Sony PlayStation Portable comes with its own UMD movie format, has a 4.3in colour screen and a pile of freebie online content

Pros: Comes with own dinky UMD movie format. Excellent 4.3in colour widescreen

Cons: Better with buds than the bundled 'phones. Max memory a bit of a let-down. Analogue stick not that great for precision
