      Dell XPS 730 H2C

      By Joel Santo Domingo

Review summary: The behemoth Dell XPS 730 H2C updates the model, but has some issues with 3D games.

Pros: Good gaming performance. Cleaner design lines than its predecessor's. More ATX-standard parts. Quiet. Sealed liquid-cooling system. Intelligent use of lights. Can play Crysis (1,280-by-1,024 resolution). Space for upgrades.

Cons: Even dual-GPU graphics cards can't help with anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering at the highest resolutions. Big and heavy. No hard switch for reset or power.

Verdict: The Dell XPS 730 H2C rights some of the wrongs that the XPS 720 had, but still has some problems. It works well, but lacks some things you'd yearn for in a system that costs this much.

Pros: First Dell that ships with overclocked CPU and RAM ; supports both CrossFire and SLI multi-graphics card configurations ; well-designed hard-drive bays ; useful software utilities with no clutterware

Cons: Poor bang-for-the-buck, even for a high-end gaming PC ; limited memory upgrade until 64-bit Vista becomes an option

Verdict: Dell's updated flagship gaming desktop incorporates the latest hardware from Intel, Nvidia, and AMD into a system that delivers some very impressive gaming scores. We'd give it a higher recommendation if it wasn't so expensive compared with systems ...
