      Apple Mac mini review

      By Ian Osborne

Review summary: Is the £649 Mac mini a wise buy?

Pros: The small form factor; Beefed-up graphics card; Faster RAM

Cons: Not enough RAM; Small hard drives; No processor upgrades

Verdict: A strong machine that definitely has its niche markets, but ultimately it's overpriced and underpowered

Apple Mac Mini (2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 320GB, Winter 2009)

Pros: Competitive Nvidia G9400M graphic chip ; includes iLife '09 digital media software ; energy-efficient ; space-saving chassis retains distinct design

Cons: Similarly priced PCs offer increased functionality ; phone support only lasts 90 days from purchase

Verdict: Apple's newest high-end Mac Mini maintains its small, stylish footprint, and as with the cheaper version, this $799 model has impressive multitasking capabilities. You'll like this desktop if juggling apps with attractive hardware is important to you, ...

How to Buy a Green Business Desktop

      By Joel Santo Domingo

      Review summary: Windows compatible.

Pros: Compact. Energy efficient. Quiet. Dual-core performance. Wireless 802.11g and Bluetooth built in. New iLife '08. Mac Os X 10.5 Leopard makes the mini and iMac officially Windows compatible

Cons: Only 1GB of RAM standard (2GB would be better, especially if you use Boot Camp). No TV tuner. No keyboard or mouse included. This is the only wireless Mac without 802.11n

Verdict: With a small bump in memory and CPU speed, this quintessential small-form-factor desktop computer is still a leader among energy-efficient systems.

Apple Mac Mini 2.0GHz (Early 2009)

Review summary: The slot loading DVD drive of the Mac Mini helps to save on space and gives it a clean looking finish

Pros: Two independent video outputs ; Decent gaming performance ; 5x USB ports and 1x FireWire 800

Cons: Still no HDMI option ; Mediocre RAM and hard-disk spec ; The price has gone up

Verdict: But, the price looks right compared to the US, so we may have our relatively weak currency to blame

      Apple Mac Mini 1.42 GHz

Review summary: As a home computer for the keen digital photographer, the Mac Mini ishard to fault, and it certainly falls into the 'accessory' category at this price (less than a top-flight compact camera)

      Pros: Great for editing

      Cons: A bit underpowered

Verdict: While you can get a PC with screen and keyboard for this money, it's unlikely to have the build quality and sheer style of the Mac Mini.
