      iMac Review

Review summary: The Macworld team tests out the latest generation of Apple iMacs, and discover them to be very interesting. Read on to discover what Apple's new consumer - but increasingly professional - level Mac has to offer.

Pros: Compact all-in-one design, new slimmer keyboard, lower prices across the board, FireWire 800 port, larger screen (especially impressive on 24-inch model)

Cons: Glossy screen frustrates some users, viewing angle not so good on 20-inch model

Verdict: With large displays, room for a lot of internal storage and RAM, and a striking new design, the latest iMacs are a nice step forward €" and good value to boot. Performance gains are minimal over the last iMacs, but as computers that straddle the line ...

Apple iMac 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo

Review summary: The iMac comes in two screen sizes, 20 and 24in.

Pros: Great design, Ease of use

Cons: Lacks space for video editing work

Verdict: Whether such a machine will be forthcoming we can only hope. Suffice to say we'll be watching the next Apple keynote speech with fingers crossed. The new iMac is a great system but just not perfect for the frequent video editor

      Apple 24in iMac

Review summary: Choosing a video-editing platform from Apple's current desktop range is a conundrum. The Mac Pro towers do provide 'best of class' performance but for everyday video editing it's a case of overkill.

Pros: Great design, Ease of use

Cons: Lacks space for video editing work

Verdict: The iMac is elegant, quiet and effective but the video-editing capacity could be improved

Review summary: apple imac (24-inch, 2.8ghz) review: With the same elegant design as its 20-inch, 2.4GHz sibling, the 24-inch, 2.8GHz iMac offers 30 percent more screen area and a modest performance boost.

Pros: Industry-leading design, Big, beautiful display, Excellent application performance

Cons: Higher-end model features same midrange graphics card of lower-end models, Free phone support ends after 90 days, Might want to hold off until Leopard is released to save yourself the cost of an OS upgrade

Verdict: With the same elegant design as its 20-inch, 2.4GHz sibling, the 24-inch, 2.8GHz iMac offers 30 percent more screen area and a modest performance boost. The iMac competes with the PC desktop market now better than perhaps any previous Mac to date, but ...

      Apple iMac (24in)

Pros: Sleek, all-in-one design, improved screen quality

      Cons: All-in-one design limits expansion

Verdict: As appealing as the new iMac is, with the Leopard operating system coming this month, I'd recommend holding off. If you do, you'll get the new OS preinstalled.
