      Apple LED Cinema Display review

      By Mark Hattersley

Review summary: The new LED Cinema Display takes Apple's mid-range monitor in a completely new direction. But just how good is it, and can a glossy display ever be worth £635? Macworld takes a long, hard squint at Apple's new monitor (includes gamut chart testing).

Pros: Fantastic visual style, built in connections for MagSafe power and USB 2.0 ; high quality H-IPS display

Cons: Expensive ; glossy display doesn't offer accurate enough colour calibration for designers and photographers ; can't be adjusted in height ; Apple not offering adaptors for older Mac and MacBook owners

Verdict: Apple's Cinema Displays have been languishing for a while. Once the king of monitor choices (at a reasonable price, too) the displays have been stuck in a rut and slowly overtaken by better models for more reasonable prices.

Review summary: The LED Cinema Display represents many firsts for Apple, including the company's first LED backlit stand-alone display and the first external display designed specifically for Apple laptops. Its lack of compatibility with other Macs is disappointing, ...

Pros: Excellent viewing angle ; single three-headed cable provides power, USB 2.0 connectivity and signal

Cons: Works only with Apple's latest laptops ; no swivel, pivot, or height adjustment ; settings not easily customizable

Verdict: Other new features include an LED backlight that is mercury free, warms up faster, and may last longer than the CCFL backlights found in most LCD monitors. A single three-headed cable is permanently attached to the display, providing power to your ...
